NYC’s 4 Must-Do Winter Activities

New York City: this concrete jungle is known for its towering skyscrapers, Broadway shows, and busy streets. However, there’s more to it than just what people perceive. Many people don’t realize one of the most exciting times to be in this city is during the winter!

Between the decorated shop windows, giant Christmas trees, ice skating, and more, winter in NYC is a truly magical place. If you ever find yourself planning a vacation to NYC, here are four of the best NYC winter activities you shouldn’t miss.

1. Ice Skating

Wherever there’s cold weather, you can’t miss ice skating! Ice skating is one of the most popular NYC winter activities for locals and tourists alike.

If you’re looking for an outdoor ice skating rink that’s open late, then you should visit the Bank of America Winter Village at Bryant Park Rink. This Midtown attraction even has food stalls lining the rink in case you build up a hunger dashing across the ice. Here, you can rent skates for as low as $20.

For a quintessential NYC winter activity, visit The Rink at the Rockefeller Center. This is the most iconic ice skating rink in New York, and is also right near the famed Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree. Though the queues are often long, this winter activity in NYC is definitely worth it!

2. Restaurant Week

New York City is known for its number of famous restaurants that serve a variety of dishes from cultures around the world. Unfortunately, eating out at all of these wonderful places may be above your NYC vacation budget.

Well, good news: NYC Winter Restaurant Week allows you to enjoy 3-course meals for just $29 for lunch and $42 for dinner. Reservations begin January 8, and the “week” itself actually runs from January 22 – February 9. This event is one of the best winter activities in NYC for foodies that want to explore NYC’s most popular restaurants for a bargain.

3. Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show

Who doesn’t love dogs, right? They’re cute, fluffy, and eager to give you licks of love whenever you’re around them. If you agree with all of the above, then it is a must that you visit the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show in February. This is the NYC winter activity for all of you pet lovers out there.

At this canine spectacular, dogs of all different breeds put their best paw forward in the competition. They’re tested for agility, obedience, and showmanship in front of a panel of judges and hundreds of dog-lovers at Madison Square Garden. Find out which dog will earn the top spot of Best in Show while getting to enjoy the fur-filled festivities!

4. Fondue

With the winter weather sending chills throughout your body, there’s nothing better than sitting in front of the fireplace with a pot of something warm and delicious in front of you. Yes, it may seem old school, but fondue is still one of the best winter activities for warming up.

Thankfully, NYC has a few, tasty fondue spots to choose from. Try The Winter Garden at the Standard East Village, which is the only place in the city where you can eat fondue inside of traditional yurts. You’ll even get to enjoy the molten dish together with a glass of kirsch to top everything off.

Alternatively, you can try Taureau, which serves nothing but fondue in 3 various preparations.  Fondue is an NYC winter activity you probably hadn’t thought of before now, but is worth the visit. With either of the choices listed here, you’re pretty much guaranteed to leave with a warm belly to contend with the cold.

In order to experience all of the winter activities NYC has to offer, you need to find a spot to stay. However, hotels in NYC are often way above budget, and don’t offer the amenities of home. Instead, opt for a short-term studio rental in NYC or other home-style accommodation. These provide you with all of the creature comforts of your own apartment. Additionally, they’re the more economical and convenient option.
