The Cheapest Neighborhoods to Live in NYC

NYC is known for being one of the most expensive cities in the U.S. to rent an apartment. In fact, for the past few years, the rates have been on an upward trend. However, for many living in the “city that never sleeps,” finding an affordable rental is at the top of their to-do list. Regardless of if you are looking for temporary housing NYC or a more long-term solution, some of the most affordable neighborhoods to consider are found here.

Sunnyside, Queens

If you are searching for a safe, quiet neighborhood, just minutes from midtown Manhattan, then Sunnyside is perfect. Easily arrive at this diverse community via the 7 train and find a number of rentals that are much less than other nearby options in NYC. An added bonus is the fact that there are better-than-average public schools in this neighborhood.

East Village, Manhattan

For those who want to live in the Greenwich Village area, but can’t afford the high cost of rent, they should consider East Village. This is more affordable and farther away from the trains, but the nightlife is awesome and it has a younger vibe that many college students love.

Prospect Heights, Brooklyn

Prospect Heights offers a number of NYC short term rentals that are more affordable and that have a Brooklyn-esque feel. There are plenty of nearby bar and restaurant options and Prospect Park is just a short walk or bike ride away.

Battery Park, Manhattan

There is no question that Tribeca is a popular neighborhood, but many New Yorkers find the rental costs excessive. An option to consider is Battery Park, which doesn’t have all the charm found in Tribeca, but offers full-service buildings, more park space and amazing views of the Hudson River. Also, Tribeca is just a short walk from Battery Park. This makes it the perfect alternative if you are searching for affordable rentals in NYC.

Inwood, Manhattan

While the majority of Manhattan is anything but “bargain territory,” there are a number of deals available all over town. One exception is Inwood, which is located at the borough’s northern end. While you can’t avoid the longer than normal commute, the housing options are pretty diverse. Thanks to the influx of new residents, a number of interesting restaurants and stores have popped up in Inwood. Inwood Hill Park is also found nearby, which is a beautiful location to spend time in and explore.
When you take some time to discover the rental options available in NYC you will find that there are a number of affordable neighborhoods to consider. By using the information here, you can reduce the time you spend searching and get in your new apartment faster.
